ST. LOUIS — A little more than 1,000 city seniors have applied to participate in the new property tax relief program since it launched about two weeks ago, city assessor Michael Dauphin said Tuesday.
The majority of the applications have been completed online, and processing in the office has been relatively smooth, he added.
The city’s total pales in comparison to that of St. Charles County, which opened applications March 1 and has seen 6,000 apply. But Dauphin noted that St. Charles County is also offering a bigger break.
The city’s program allows older homeowners to freeze the amount they owe in property taxes due to the city — roughly 20% of the total levy. St. Charles County allows seniors to put a hold on their entire property tax bill, including the portions that go to public schools and libraries. Seniors can apply to take part in the city program from now through June 30. Applicants must be city residents who are eligible for Social Security and will be 62 or older on Sept. 1. They can only apply for the freeze on a primary residence appraised at $500,000 or less.
Applications are available at the assessor’s office in City Hall, 1200 Market Street, and online at .
