COLUMBIA, MO.• Missouri coach Barry Odom confirmed after Thursday's practice that junior college defensive lineman Malik Young won't be playing for the Tigers. 

"Yesterday we got final confirmation from the NCAA that we're going to help him go somewhere else," Odom said. "He won't meet the qualifications to get here. Hate it for him because he's been patient and done a really good job to get everything worked out. Obviously it affects what we're thinking from a recruiting standpoint. He's got a lot of options. He's not going to look long for a place to go because he's such a good person and a high-level player."

Young graduated from high school in Marietta, Ga., in 2013, then attended West Georgia Tech, but the school dropped its football program. Young resurfaced at Eastern Arizona College where he played the last two seasons and became a first-team NJCAA All-American in 2016. He was widely rated a three-star recruit coming out of junior college.

Odom clarified that Young's "years in school, progress toward degree and conference rule" determined he wasn't eligible to play at Missouri. Young is not expected to be eligible at another SEC school.

In February, Young chose MU over Florida, Nebraska, Arkansas, Arizona State, Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas State and Arizona, among others. 

The Tigers are otherwise set with eight scholarship players at defensive tackle: veterans Terry Beckner Jr., A.J. Logan, Markell Utsey and Tyrell Jacobs and newcomers Rashad Brandon, Walter Palmore, Kobie Whiteside and Caleb Sampson.
