Despite not scoring a goal Saturday at Energizer Park, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ City SC came away with a point and put an end to a stretch of four consecutive losses as they drew a 0-0 tie against Vancouver.
A Vancouver club that entered Saturday’s match with the most points in Major League Soccer and with a plus-11 goal differential got 14 shots off, but had seven blocked by City SC and had only one go on goal. City SC got off eight shots and had two go on goal.
The draw earned City SC (2-4-3) a point for the first time since beating Seattle on April 15.
City SC momentarily held a lead in the 25th minute when Marcel Hartel found the back of the net with an assist from Conrad Wallem, whose cross found Hartel alone in penalty area for what would have been Hartel’s second goal of the season. Hartel’s goal, one in which he had enough space and time to settle the ball on the turf before taking his shot, went under review to check for a possible offside.

The review showed that Wallem was offside when Celio Pompeu passed to Klauss as he charged into the penalty area with a defender trailing him. Pompeu’s pass to Klauss was broken up by Vancouver’s Tristan Blackmon, leading the ball to deflect and find Wallem, who had gotten behind the defense by the time the ball found him.
Referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere announced the goal was disallowed as Wallem was determined to be in an offside position.
Another scoring opportunity for City SC presented itself in the 42nd minute when it received a free kick from less the 30 yards out after Emmanuel Sabbi’s attempted a slide tackle on Wallem led the Vancouver right winger to be issued a yellow card.
The free kick off the boot of Hartel found Klauss, who charged in as the ball sailed toward the near post. Klauss attempted to head the cross in but the attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka and eventually cleared from the penalty area.
A foul in the 45th minute when Edier Ocampo tackled Pompeu gave City SC another free kick in with the same range of their free kick opportunity minutes prior, but this attempt, a low-lining kick from Hartel, went far left of the near post and was not anywhere close enough for any City SC scorer to make a play on it.
After coming in as a second-half substitute in the 73rd minute for Cedric Teuchert, Simon Becher had a scoring opportunity come his way, but it was just out of reach for Becher, who once played for Vancouver.
With City SC advancing the ball across midfield and momentum behind them as Alfredo Morales found a streaking Klauss across the middle of the field, Klauss issued a wide pass to left back Akil Watts. Watts delivered a cross that curled in towards a charging Becher, but was just out of reach by Becher, who lunged at the ball feet first.
City SC got another shot attempt off in the 87th minute from Wallem, but Wallem’s shot was directly at Takaoka and saved without much difficulty.
In the match, City SC was without defender Henry Kessler, the club’s leader in minutes played with 720 through eight starts prior to Saturday’s match. Kessler was said to have suffered an injury during Friday’s training and was ruled out early Saturday. Center back Joakim Nilsson was also unavailable Saturday, who training Friday after being sidelined by a knee injury on April 5 in an away match at Sporting Kansas City.
