Republic Services announced plans on Tuesday to invest $19 million in renovating two recycling centers in 蜜芽传媒.
The聽 Phoenix, Ariz.-based recycling and waste company will install advanced technology capable of tripling sorting capacity to about 30 tons of recyclables an hour at its Hazelwood center.
鈥淢ost people know they can toss newspapers and milk jugs in the recycling,鈥 said Brent Batliner, Republic鈥檚 蜜芽传媒-area recycling manager. 鈥淏ut they don鈥檛 always realize that all plastic containers and all paper materials can be thrown in, too.鈥
At its Bella Villa center in south 蜜芽传媒 County, Republic will be expanding the facility to reduce drive times for its trucks.
Republic Services pumped the majority of the money into its Hazelwood facility, which will pursue technology that can accommodate a medley of materials, Batliner said.

The tripled capacity will be met with 蜜芽传媒鈥 sobering recycling rate: 3 percent of total waste, according to Siemens鈥 annual Green City Index.
Batliner said that the technology will 鈥渂ring recycling to the next level,鈥 but that the end goal is to dramatically increase the level of recycling participation in 蜜芽传媒 city to 30 or 40 percent.
鈥淓asily 50 percent of what you throw away can be recycled,鈥 he said.
More recycling can keep waste removal rates and the cost of certain goods down, he said.
鈥淩ecycling facilities produce a raw product and feed it to manufacturing venues at a low price,鈥 Batliner said. 鈥淭his helps lower the prices consumers pay at grocery stores for goods such as toilet paper and boxes of cereal.鈥
Batliner said that Republic plans to launch an 鈥渆ducational campaign鈥 on recycling.
鈥淲e need to come up with a plan to push the average household to recycle 15 pounds per week and that requires education,鈥 he said.
